In South Africa, at least 10% of the population is unlikely to be connected to the grid in the foreseeable future. The low load demand and dispersed nature of rural settlements and excessive and rising infrastructure costs mean that extending conventional electricity networks is not viable in many rural areas. At the same time, there is a need to improve health and safety with safer alternatives to paraffin, candles, and wood, which are widely used for heating and lighting in unelectrified communities. This is why we are developing products that will make a difference today and in the long run.
Developed in the labs at WITS University’s Electrical and Information Engineering Department, Professor Willie Cronje’s efforts demonstrated how innovative research could translate into socially transformative technology solutions.
When the WITS Enterprise teamed up with Social Impact Investment Firm, Umbono Capital in 2019, Peco Power was established.
Peco Power’s solar-powered mini-grid solution won the WITS University Vice Canceller’s Award for Innovation in 2020. Developed by a team of engineers at Wits University, it has been designed specifically with low-income households in mind.
Ever since then, our products have been providing rural communities with safe, reliable and affordable electrification alternatives, thereby improving their quality of life and access to basic needs.
